There is always a certain amount of buffering between the backend and the 
frontend.  This delay is introduced in several places:

- - Buffering between the tuner and the encoder
- - Disk cache
- - Buffering between the disk and the decoder
- - Buffering between the decoder and the player

Without all that buffering, the video would be very bad since everything 
would have to happen synchronously - one slight delay in one component 
would have a knock on effect and affect the video.

There is also a certain amount of clock drift between the input signal 
(who's timebase is generated at the TV station) and the video output 
(who's timebase is generated in your PC).  i.e. the frame rate of the 
input signal will not exactly match the framerate of the output signal.  
If there were no buffering then you would likely end up with a buffer 
underrun very quickly if the output was running marginally faster than the 
input.

Use xawtv (or similar) to watch liveTV...  If you don't want the 
features of a PVR then don't use it.
