[mythtv-users] Anyone know how to change v4lctl settings?

I have an ATI TV wonder ve that displays high contrast and color images
with the default v4lctl values.  I find that I have to run xawtv first
before I can change the v4lctl attributes.  Is there a way that I can
change the attributes without running xawtv first?

I use 
v4lctl -c /dev/video0 setattr contrast 12000

but it only works after I run and then exit from xawtv.
