A buffer with a timestamp would be fine, but you'd need something like
ntp to keep the clocks sync'd.   You'd still need a buffer - even LAN
and hard drive traffic will occasionally have hiccups, etc. - but it
could be pretty small, like 5 seconds or so.

But the others are correct in pointing out the other issues to
overcome.  sound card buffers, etc.  However, we could get it pretty
close.
