Don't think anyone has mentioned this before but you can build a cheap 
converter to adapt the xbox ir reciever to usb. The xbox ir drivers for 
linux work pretty well under linux. It is designed to emulate an hid 
keyboard device so no messy lircd configs. The reciever handles standard 
dvd player codes so any universal remote can drive it.
