Ah thought I'd put that in my original email, but looking back I see I 
hadn't.
No this only occurs through the viaslice output driver, playing the mpeg 
stream through any other player/machine and the quality is just perfect. 
It looks like it is specific to the viaslice output driver. I just wanted to 
check if any other CLE266/unichrome users were seeing this too before I 
started debugging just in case something was faulty on my machine.

The effect is similar to the macroblocking... but not quite!
