Fire up aumix (or alsamixer) while playing and double check the volumes 
shown there - maybe some external program has decided to keep resetting 
the volumes.  Are you sure that the sound being recorded is at the right 
volume - if you're going through an satellite decoder or something, maybe 
that's got a volume control on it too that's suddenly decided to reset 
itself to a lower setting.
