When I was playing around with modelines (using 480p, through a
VGA->Component converter), I accidentally got my Sony CRT HDTV to
switch to widescreen mode. I was using xvidtune at the time. Try
playing around with the front and/or back porch settings; also try
playing around with the +/- horiz/vert sync settings. This experiment
might be easier in PowerStrip (Windows) since IIRC it allows you to
lock the H and V frequencies.
You might also try asking in the HTPC forum over at avsforum.com
