I admit I haven't read the rest of this thread yet, so I apologize is 
someone else (or 20 someones) have already said this but:

STAY AWAY FROM PROMISE!  They will only cause you ulcers...  Their 
Linux driver support is half-assed at best, and their hardware's 
recovery routines are usually unhealthy for your data.  I've recently 
lost an entire RAID-5 array (360GB) due to a glitch on my FT SX4000.

If you've got the $$$$, go with 3ware.  The money you save on Promise 
isn't worth it, IMHO.

I didn't have the money, so I ended up getting a cheap HighPoint card 
and using Linux software RAID to replace my FastTrack.  The FastTrack 
is definitely faster than softRAID in terms of throughput, but I'd 
rather have safer, slower data personally.
