Yes, or once you have initially checked out cvs you can: cvs -z3 -d 
:pserver:mythtv at cvs.mythtv.org:/var/lib/mythcvs update -dP mythtv

Current CVS is 0.15.20040528-1.  It is defined in 
libs/libmyth/mythcontext.h (MYTH_BINARY_VERSION).

Are you sure you don't have two mythbackends, one in /usr/bin and one in 
/usr/local/bin?
