I'm running CVS from July 18. I'm running 'mythbackend -d" from a command 
line. I haven't seen any line like "avformat error -1" (or any other error) 
when the backend dies, it silently exits as far as the log on command line 
shows.

Next time it happens I'll do as you suggest. Thanks for the input!
