It might.  It will keep it so the length shown in players matches the actual
length of the file.  Without renumbering, WMP, etc will show the file length
as the pre-cut time as all the timestamps haven't changed at all.  This is
obviously suboptimal...  And if you seek past the REAL end of file, it does
strange thing.  If you renumber the Presentation Time Stamps (PTS) after 
editing, that is no longer an issue.

It may also help with the stream data problems like you mentioned, I'm not
sure.  lvemux with the -r command-line option will renumber PTS for you when
it muxes.  Seems to work quite well so far.
