But to be honest, the only thing that worked for me was to stop any 
background CPU hogging processes going on while recording.  I was 
transcoding shows, I wrote a script which does a killall -STOP transcode 
at 7:59pm and killall -CONT transcode at 11:00pm (my main hours of 
recording) so I can pause any transcoding I'm doing during prime-time.
