Minimal setup for transcoding - was Re: [mythtv-users] Generic

I've a random related question.
What's the minimum I need to set up on my random unrelated linux RH9 box
in order to get transcoding? I don't want a backend or a frontend, but
I'm rather hoping - I'm new to mythtv - that I can hit a series of stuff
on the remote and have a given clip transcoded on the other machine so
that it doesn't busy up the ME6k box out front. I'd enjoy tasking that
out to my gateway box, as it's usually not busy.
Hey, is there any way to rope in these various encoder/decoder chips
we're seeing on various bits of hardware in order to help with the
transcoding? Nah, I didn't think so, but old Apple demos used to use
the sound/FDD processor to do more work, and using an idle PVR350 for
transcoding work would have been a similarly cool hack.
Anyway, lemme know if I can slave some transcoding out to the idle box
in the back, and I'll be happy.

WAP is the sound a clunky Internet-enabled cellphone makes
when you throw it at a brick wall in frustration.
