Don't know if this is a possibility, but I just got my Hauppauge remote 
working after a long, long time of it not working.  Turns out that 
Mandrake had pre-compiled lirc 0.6.6 lirc modules and had installed them 
with the kernel, even if you didn't install lirc.

Howabout this as root:
# updatedb
# locate lirc_i2c
# locate lirc_dev

You shouldn't have more than one lirc_i2c in your 
/lib/modules/{yourkernel}/ directories.

Once I whacked the old stuff, depmod found the correct modules that lirc 
had installed in misc/ and everything was pretty cake-like after that.
