The README was the first thing I read when I noticed the makefiles where
missing, the documentation on the website was second and only after that
did I use gossamer threads to see if somebody else had already
encountered this "problem".

I read an article from a guy who had done leading work on several large
open source projects and he said that good and up-to-date documentation
is the key feature needed for a succesful developer community. If not,
you should be prepared to answer the same questions over and over again.
