[mythtv-users] Is the MythTV .nuv format non-standard ... or am I missing something?

Yes. I think it is a slightly modified version of the format. You may
need to apply a patch to mencoder. 

What I always wanted to know is why a different format was choosen.

I am sure there should be some technical reason behind it, but just that
it would have been great if it can be played in mplayer without applying
a patch.
