The standard rpm practice (at least in RH distros) is to have

kernel-blah.src.rpm

and

kernel-source-blah.i386.rpm

If you want to build a custom kernel use the latter, if you want to
build rpm kernels, adding patches etc use the first, which will land
somewhere in /usr/src/redhat/... with the default settings.
