If you're a purist, don't bother, use the digital outs to a receiver/amp.
3 Stereo plugs = 6 channels... your point?
Computer Speakers all pretty much suck for surround sound. If you want a
real theater experience, use a real amp with good decoding. since so many
people are using the TV-out then I guess there really aren't alot of purists
around here, but that's just my opinion, I could be wrong. (apologies to
Dennis Miller) It really all depends on what quality you want and the size
of your system. If you want decent quality, then digital out on built in
cards to a stereo is most likely fine. If you want extreme quality, then
get a real 24 bit sound card, but I still think that is a debatable issue
when you are talking about ac3 pass-through, for passthrough it really
doesn't matter what your card is all it's doing is passing bits so...
Let the flames begin :)
Anyway, the first thing I do when I get a new soundcard is to just set the
digital out only on, enable passthrough plug it into my HT receiver and I'm
done. I really don't want any soundboard doing my decoding, they are all
inferior to CE devices.
