[mythtv-users] [OT] Definitive Guide for G400 TV Out?

I know this is slightly off topic even though it's for my mythTV project
but it seems like there's a lot of people on this list with similar
configurations to mine who have things working (and probably others like
me that don't). Over the last few weeks I've been doing a lot of
reading through the list and various places I've been able to google
for. I've found a lot of information supporting using Matrox's beta
linux driver and other information (probably more quantity-wise) stating
that you are best off to use the framebuffer device support. That said,
there's dates to take into account. Framebuffering appears to have been
supported for quite some time while Matrox's beta driver is relatively
new.

So...

Question 1: If I were setting up a machine today, which should I
choose?

To give some history, I've actually tried both. I was marginally
successful with the Matrox driver (manually configured...didn't try to
use powerdesk) but found the output to be too bright and didn't know how
to adjust it. Upon looking around it seemed that all of the tweaks for
adjusting brightness, contrast, x/y offsets, etc seemed to all be
through the fb device. So I decided that's what I needed, recompiled
the kernel to add framebuffer support, and walked through several of the
howto's. Things seem ok up to a point and then I get stuck not being
able to start X.

Which leads me to question 2.

Question 2a: If using the Matrox beta driver, is there a way to change
settings? Can I still safely use the maven stuff to adjust settings (or
is there another way to do it)?

Question 2b: If using the framebuffer support, can anyone point me to a
web resource that's a definitive guide for getting the G400 TV out
working with framebuffering? I'm not a complete linux idiot (but
perhaps close :) ) but a semi-foolproof recipe at this point would be
really useful.

TIA for your help.
