That's something I don't know about.  I'm not even sure I can speculate
on this one, since using a framebuffer doesn't necessitate X...

Not sure I understood the first part of that, but for the rest of it,
the answer is yes.  But there's an even easier way, depending upon your
soundcard.  I've got an ALSA config that routes the analog(ue) sound
through the SPDIF port.  One cable.  No RCA cables whatsoever.  And the
receiver can detect the type of signal and adjust its decoding on the
fly.  So when it's DD, the little blue light on my receiver lights up. 
And when it's not, I get either 2-channel or Prologic audio...

I had a nightmare of a time getting ALSA to work with my card.  Turns
out that for 2-3 months I had the wrong type of cable connected to it. 
And since ALSA is so poorly[1] documented, groups like this one tend to
be able to provide more support for a diversity of software
configurations... get a SBLive 5.1.  It's a good, low-priced card that
does its job well...
