what you need to do is 
cd /usr/src/linux-2.4.20...at 
make mrproper
cp /boot/config-2.4.20...at ./.config 
make oldconfig 
make depend 

also make sure you remove the "custom" from the toplevel kernel
makefile. that should allow you to atleast compile lirc.
you could also allow the install of bleeding packages from atrpms, but
if it doesn't work you are on your own.
