into one master backend. Each frontend talks to a local backend, but the
local backend doesn't have to have any local database or capture
sources, you can just point it to another backend and database and
voila, instant slave.

So yes, you can have multiple frontends using one backend over the
network, you just need to put a local slave backend under each remote
frontend. The addressing is done when you run mythtvsetup for a slave
backend. This is all covered well in the docs.
