Another thing to note about the non-Xv code is that it will actually skip
frames if your system isn't fast enough to scale and display the full
frame-rate.  When this occurs, a message will be printed to let the user
know.  This could account for some of the bad quality being seen as well.
I coded the non-Xv mode to try to keep video/audio in sync even if it meant
skipping video frames.  It wasn't meant for full-time production use.
