That would require two entirely unnecessary reboots. Do this instead:
1) from a root prompt, type:
init 3
This kills off X and drops you to text-mode, identical to rebooting
w/your inittab set to 3.
2) install and configure via drivers
3) from a root prompt, type:
init 5
This switches you back to graphical mode, launching X and your display
manager.
All done. No reboot. :)
