I think that *is* the cheaper alternative. :)

My cable box in a similar configuration to yours above is now a 
Motorola DCT5100, and with a cheaper (and only two-way) splitter, I 
couldn't ever get a good lock on HD signals w/the DCT5100. Some tuned 
in, but would drop chunks of the screen from time to time, pixellate 
badly on fast movement, etc, and other channels just wouldn't ever come 
in. I picked up that amplified splitter, and that jack is now feeding 
the DCT5100, a PVR-250 and a secondary tuner card, all without problem. 
No problem getting all the HD channels Comcast carries.

I'm not certain that it wasn't just one person who had problems with 
that setup. The "Freestyle" is more or less just an OEM 250, so in 
theory, it ought to work just fine with a full 250 or a 350, but ymmv...
