Well, that's the odd thing. Nothing but digital out was affected. 
Hooking headphones to the analog out worked fine. The only thing that 
stopped working was digital out, all other settings were still what 
they had been before... In the past, I've seen all settings revert to 
muted, but this was completely different. I was rather baffled for a 
while, because my volumes all looked good, and I didn't notice right 
away that the digital out was disabled (finally noticed it in 
gnome-aslamixer actually, which I highly recommend over kmix or cli 
alsamixer).

Perhaps some sort of script to save the alsactl config file to /tmp in 
%pre, then restore it in %post?
