I had the same problem and realized that the problem was that
mythbackend actually started before my video card drivers were loaded.
I am using Gentoo and stuck the bttv module loads in the local.start
script, which loads much after mythbackend starts. Adding a mythbackend
restart just after my bttv loading script solved the problem.
