You don't need to erase. Just run apt-get update, then apt-get install
lirc, and (assuming ATrpms is in your repo list) you'll get the ATrpms
version, which works with the PVR-x50 and numerous other cards. You
might double-check that also... I think that you may actually already
have the right lirc pulled in when you apt-get install mythtv-suite...
