Yes. Sorry, but you have answered your own question and I don't know why you
are asking. You know you don't have hardware encoding, so yes, you must use
software to encode or transcode.

The files reside at the path you specify when you set up MythTV. Again, I'm
sorry, but nobody can tell you where your files are, you are the one who
decides that and sets the path for the backend.
If the a transcoded file is larger than the original, the bitrate is larger
than the original which results in a larger file. If you want the transcoded
file to be smaller, you must use settings that result in a lower bitrate for
whatever codec you are using. Once again, I'm sorry, but without detailed
information that includes the stream parameters and the codec settings it's
impossible to answer such a question.

Assuming you have set up multiple profiles that are configured with the
bitrate/quality settings you want to choose from, you simply choose which one
you want to use on the advanced recording screen for the chosen program.

You're welcome, but please read the documentation and search the list archives
before asking questions. I understand you may be frustrated at a lack of
responses, but a subject like this isn't very polite. It's somewhat arrogant
to expect people to take the time to answer questions that are already
answered and explained very well in the documentation and here on this list.
