[mythtv-users] irxevent failure

are you starting this from the console under x or an ssh session? if this 
happens from the console - check that lircd is running: 'ps ax | grep 
lirc'. if you are trying to start it from an ssh session, you need to set 
the DISPLAY variable to the appropriate X session (like "localhost:0" OR 
"`hostname`:1") using export or setenv. (for bash or csh, respectively)
