I understand your complaint about the eject button & tray cover, but do 
you really think the quality of the audio/video is the fault of your 
DVD drive?  It's more likely your player or the ability of your system 
to decode fast enough (don't know what your system specs are, though if 
you have a Pundit I'd assume your CPU should be plenty fast enough).  
The only issue on the drive end is the ability of the drive & bus to 
provide a data stream to the player/decoder fast enough.  If it can't, 
it's just as likely to be the fault of your mobo/IDE controller/bus/
cable as it is to be the drive.  You say you have another box with a 
different DVD drive that's better, but have you tried that drive in 
your Pundit, and have you tried the 'bad' drive in the other box?  
Also, have you tried playing a DVD with something other than mplayer?
