Just for people information, my problem was that dma was not enabled on my
drive. The reason it was not getting enabled is that there was some dma
failure detected during boot up and thus dma was not turned on. These dma
failure were caused by a bad cable (tick old 40 wire cable). I replaced with
a tinner (80 wire cable) and everything got fixed. dma enabled automatically
without having to add an entry in harddisks file.
