Did you compile in support for XvMC?  I seem to recall reading a post 
about XvMC (and another type of hardware decoding - CLE?) having color 
limits on overlays so that the OSD stuff appears in greyscale.  I'd guess 
that's what you're seeing, if everything else is in color.
