[mythtv-users] No Playback, Live TV OK -- FIXED

The solution to this problem lies in the profiles setup screen. Turns out
if the Audio "Type" is set to "Layer I" playback is prevented, and all
memory is sucked up by the front end. Setting this value to "Layer II"
fixes the problem. (May also have been set to Layer I - 448 Kbits -- don't
know if the bitrate is significant or not.)

Can anybody tell me what this setting is doing?

Thanks,
sjf

I seem to be having some problems with playback of recorded programs.
"Live" tv works just fine.

Some time back, after an upgrade maybe three weeks ago, I discovered that
recorded programs were playing back with very low audio. (Again, live TV
audio level was fine.) To try to compensate, I went into the various
profiles and bumped the audio level up to 100 percent. I have been unable
to play back any recordings made since that time. The screen goes blank,
and eventually the frontend seems to crash.

Yesterday, I upgraded both IVTV and Myth to the current CVS versions. This
problem still exists. I believe this is due to some kind of audio problem,
since it started when I changed the audio level, and playing back the
captured files on a windows machine shows video, but NO audio at all. Also,
the preview display works fine -- but of course it doesn't use the audio.

Last night I set the system to record 2 half-hour shows at 16:00 (PVR250
and PVR350 tuners). Some time later I started playback (well, attempted
playback) and just left the system alone. This morning, the frontend had
crashed with the following messages in the messages log...

Oct 31 16:00:03 atlas kernel: saa7115[0]: decoder set size
Oct 31 16:00:03 atlas kernel: Setting full NTSC width
Oct 31 16:00:03 atlas kernel: Setting full NTSC height

Oct 31 16:30:02 atlas kernel: ivtv: Not enough free buffers, stream 0
Oct 31 18:10:04 atlas kernel: Out of Memory: Killed process 4575
(mythfrontend).

Anybody know what is going on?

Some more information -- When starting playback of a recorded show, the
frontend ends up sucking up all available memory. Here are the first few
lines of "top" a few minutes after attempting a playback...
