Interesting, what version of Jarod's documentation are
you using? I don't see 1/2 of the commands you've
posted, on his documentation.

What worked for me was the following:

# export KERNEL=`uname -r`
# apt-get update
# apt-get install lirc-kmdl-$KERNEL

That's it, no grep commands, etc. I'm no linux expert
so I have no explaination why the export command
doesn't "stick" but I find apt-get works when I state
it at that point. Also, the apt-get update I just
threw in just-in-case. I've done enough failed to know
that both commands are worth a shot, when in doubt.
