Depends on the SATA controller. Some use the same driver as PATA. The 
folks at Pogo Linux ship out all sorts of SATA systems with stock Red 
Hat Linux 9 kernels (2.4.20 series). I want to say they use pretty much 
nothing but 3Ware SATA, but I can't recall for certain.
