Switch to using mpeg4 encoding instead of rtjpeg.  You don't have much control 
over the size of rtjpeg encodes, and noisier signals means bigger files.  
mpeg4 compression will yield fairly bitrate constrained files, so you can 
specify nearly exactly how large you want your recordings.

Using what version of mythtv?  Only reason seeks would be taking long would be 
that there wasn't a seektable in the file, and the only way that should 
happen is if the recording didn't finish for some reason.
