Since this motherboards uses shared memory for video, reducing the
resolution to 640x480 will reduce the load on the system memory bus.  Also,
it eases the computational load from scaling since the number of vertical
lines can be made to match exactly (at 480), leaving only the horizontal
scaling to be done at display time.

While this may not solve your problem, it will help in general.
