I'm not sure if this is exactly what you mean but I did try
to explain the four items that normally affect record and 
playback. There are a few execption (SB Live! has other sliders
that affect capture volume for example) but I don't know how
to generalize these execptions.

Where to expect to find things is a stickier issue. Section 7
explains how to setup ALSA during installation. If it works,
that's all you need to know. If not, the forth itme in the FAQ
gives a brief suggestion of what to do if audio is out of sync.
The Troubleshooting section has an item titled "Troubleshooting
audio" which gives more details, explainations, and a specific
test to help debug problems. 

If someone can't find these things, I'm not sure what an easier
place to find them would be?
