I have successfully compiled alsa (currently have v0.9.1) for a nForce
motherboard (Asus A7N266-VM) by simply following the instructions on the
alsa page here...

http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/doc-php/template.php3?company=Nvidia&ca
rd=nForce&chip=NM2360&module=intel8x0

After some slight inital difficulties I now have it working full duplex
without any problems under RH8.0

My modules.conf is basically as per the docs...

# ALSA portion
alias char-major-116 snd
# module options should go here

# OSS/Free portion
alias char-major-14 soundcore
#card #1
alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0
alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0
alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss
