The garbage when switching back to the console is probably because you're
using the framebuffer console driver.  I haven't found a way around this; it
might be possible to reset the console framebuffer by running the fbset
program, but this might really screw up the Nvidia X driver.  It's usually
not a really great thing to have 2 drivers manipulating your video card at
the same time.

The other option is to rebuild your kernel without framebuffer console
support.  This will give you the plain text console; the only thing you'll
lose is any boot-up splash screen your distro may have included (penguin
logo, whatever).
