Not so sneaky, really, but maybe not the recipe for
success.  Tivo can sell
boxes at a loss (like the Xbox) and recover later from
subscription fees.
They have an ongoing stream of cash to cover the
ongoing costs of running
the service (with profit left over), and they can
raise that cost as the
market will bear.  This makes the cost of entry
bearable for a large number
of consumers.

If the Telly is discontinued and the program schedule
is a proprietary
source for which there is no funding, all the boxes
would lose their
schedule-based programming function.
