Well, you lose the time-shifting stuff if you don't encode all the time,
of course.

Why not install them both (Freevo & MythTV) and play with them?

It's similar to Tivo vs. DVD-RAM box: Tivo always encodes to enable
time-shifting, the Panasonic DVD-RAM recorders don't enable it until you
press a 'turn on time-shifting' button, at which point it begins
encoding the live feed.
