Sure you can...  Just use a threaded mail client and you can easily keep 
up to date on any topic without excessive clutter.  If you just have 
every single message that comes across the mailing list isolated the 
list can be overwhelming.  If you have a list of threads it's easy, 
except for the ocassional person who replies to an existing message to 
start a new thread instead of just creating a new message.
