Not having HDTV, I might not understand correctly. I have a widescreen TV, but
NTSC inputs only, no HDTV tuner. My hardware DVD player can output in a
widescreen mode, it's 16:9 aspect ratio. mplayer and xine do this just fine
also, so I don't know what you are asking for. All that is required to my
knowledge is outputting in the aspect ratio that you want.

Of course, to present widescreen aspect ratios in NTSC with it's 4:3 aspect
ratio requires either "letterboxing" the image area or scaling it
anamorphically (which is my preferred method.) Most movie DVDs use anamorphic
widescreen these days, and the DVD player does the letterboxing when
outputting to a 4:3 display. In fact, many movies are wider than 16:9 and are
slightly "letterboxed" even when displaying on a widescreen display. :)

So, as far as I know, "Wide Mode" on a linux player is just like on any other
player, simply outputting at the desired aspect ratio. It works great with
the "Wide Mode" of my TV, anyway. :) If you are talking about some
HDTV-specific feature that I'm unfamiliar with though, I have probably missed
the point, sorry!
