The 1700 had 512MB of DDR RAM and a GF4MX 440 also. The board was an
MSI...

But I wasn't running dual displays, which does have a definite impact
on performance. You might try running a test w/a single display setup
and see if the numbers don't get much better.

The 1700 is now several hundred miles away, residing in my in-laws
computer (they went from a P233 to that...). I've got an 1800 still,
but its my wife's, its running Win2k, and the card in it is a TNT2. She
gets cranky if I do anything to disturb it :). The next closest thing
I've got is my Myth box, which is a 2600 w/onboard GF4MX. :-\

One word: mondorescue.

Use it to rip a set of full restore discs, then break it to your
heart's content, knowing you can always nuke it back to a known working
install. :)

Yeah, it took me quite a while to bump from RHL9 to Fedora, partially
because I already had a rock-solid system, partially because of time
constraints. I'm glad I took the plunge though, because the system
feels even more responsive now.
