You can get by with far less for the capture part, yes. Playback still
requires some CPU and a well-supported video card.

Yep. Or rather something provided by certain XFree86 video card drivers.

That sounds like the most likely diagnosis to me.

Live and learn. :) Grab a GF4MX for that 1.2GHz system, install the
nvidia drivers, and it ought to be plenty.

Sounds like a plan. You could probably submit such a thing for inclusion
in the official documentation also, since it isn't hardware and/or
platform specific (which is the case with my doc, and is one of the
reasons it is hosted externally).
