I think I figured this out.

 

After some long and hard searching, someone mentioned that the internal
transcoder produces a non-standard MPEG-4 file that cannot be read properly
by ANYTHING other than MythTV.

 

The solution is to use nuvexport to make a proper DivX file.

 

It would be nice if someday nuvexport was made part of MythTV, i.e. it had
it's own menu on mythfrontend.
