Jay,

I added the following four lines to /etc/rc.local

echo "Starting lircd"
setserial /dev/ttyS0 uart none
modprobe lirc_serial
/usr/local/sbin/lircd

and one line to modules.conf

alias char-major-61 lirc_serial

and I am not using lirc_dev
