Your machine is really quite grunty. It should be able to perform well
in an unoptimized situation. Rather than optimizing right up front, why
don't you try everything stock first and see what happens. For instance,
you might try a fresh RH9 install, accepting defaults for disk
partitioning etc. Use the stock RH9 kernel. If it works for you use the
stock OSS sound drivers rather than alsa. When you compile mythtv, don't
mess with settings.pro. The only thing I definitely would do is:
/sbin/hdparm -d1 /dev/hda
as root after boot. The reason I suggest this "don't mess with it"
strategy is perhaps you screwed yourself with some setting, perhaps in
how you compiled the kernel, or whatever. Using the defaults would give
you sort of a known baseline. If that works you can start changing things.
